Initially, Carlton is branded the villain. It's such a, such a beautiful gift wrapped in a pretty little bow for the writers to be like, here's some more complex stuff for you to do. I'd be sitting on sets scrolling through it reading because, as an actor, it's such a gift. We'd get a new script every two or three weeks and every time I got a new episode, I'd run back to my trailer. How does it feel to play this complex, troubled version of Carlton? We're still trying to figure out a way to link up but like schedules, everyone's running around the entire country, but we're gonna make something happen. Alfonso and I have not spoken about the character. Like we still have episodes left, anything could happen?ĭid you hear from Alfonso at all about his take on your Carlton? Again, like does it happen in the show? I don't know. Did you do the dance when you got the role? I had a callback and the callback was over zoom and I had practised and practised and practised and they didn't ask me to do it. So for the initial tape, obviously, I didn't do it. I remember when I was prepping for that audition, like I practised that Carlton dance. Season 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9… Question: can you do the Carlton dance? I think that over time, you see what he's struggling with and you see him grow and I think that the emotional catharsis from Carlton's character is that growth throughout the season and for future seasons. And so I don't think you're supposed to like him off the bat. He's irrational but at the end of the day, he is a 16-year-old boy. I talked about the weight of the universe, like, all of these things are weighing on him and so he doesn't make the best decisions. And, you know, the pressures of being the only son of a very hyper successful Black man in a white world. He's a 16-year-old kid dealing with anxiety, dealing with this sort of his inability to connect with his own Blackness. I think they definitely hated the character, right? I'm sure there were a lot of people that were like, "I just don't like this direction at all." But Carlton isn't a character that you are supposed to fall in love with from the get-go because you know, we come into the story at a point in his life that's really tumultuous. I'd say it was easier in the sense that I wasn't in between takes like, "Okay, how does Alfonso ?" you know, like, in that sense, but it was definitely a challenge from the get-go for me to separate myself from from that version of the character.īecause I have seen people say something along the lines of "I can't let Alfonso's Carlton go like, what is this? What is happening?" But it starts from Morgan and the producers and everyone on the show, just sort of giving me the freedom to go forth and do what you do, bring yourself to this role. Do you think it was easier that your character was so different from the original Carlton? I remember every single day on set he'd be like, "Hey, you deserve to be here. I think each and every single one of us in the cast, at some point, whether it was before we started filming, or while we're filming, we made the decision that I belong here, I deserve to be here, I've worked really hard to be here and so I'm gonna just go out there and do my job.
